Slippery Rock, PA- After a doubleheader sweep of California yesterday, the Mercyhurst Softball team hit the road for a pair of games at Slippery Rock University. The Lakers dropped game one, 9-1, but responded to take game two, 3-1. The Lakers are now 6-10 in conference play.
How it Happened:
Game One
The Rock jumped on the Lakers in the first inning, connecting with two homeruns to take an early 3-0 lead. Slippery Rock added a fourth run in the third inning, with another home run to take a commanding lead into the fourth.
The Lakers got on the board in the top half of the fourth inning thanks to a solo shot from Francesca Latino, her 3rd of the season. The Rock responded right back in the fourth with a pair of runs to extend their lead to 5. The big inning continued for the home team as three more runs came across to make the score 9-1, which held for a final in 5 innings.
In addition to the Francesca Latino homerun, Brianne Egelston and Kacie Irwin had the only other hits for the Lakers.
Game Two
As they've done so many times before, the Lakers responded in a huge way despite an earlier defeat. In game two, Mercyhurst scored first in the second inning as Brianne Egelston singled to lead off the inning. Egelston came around to score on a wild pitch. Egelston then singled in the fourth before being driven home by a Francesca Latino homerun, her second of the day and 4th of the season.
Morgan Hilty put together a stellar performance, throwing 6.1 innings while scattering 6 hits and striking out 3 in the win.
