Lakers Close Out Spring Games in Florida

Auburndale, FL- Heading into their last day of spring games in Florida, the Mercyhurst Softball team fell short of Ashland University, 8-4 and Upper Iowa University, 6-1. The Lakers are now 3-8 in the young season and will head back to Erie, PA to begin the bulk of their schedule.

Game One: Ashland

The Lakers got out to an early lead to start the game as Kacie Irwin, Brianne Egelston and Eliza Reynolds all singled in the first inning. Irwin and Egelston came around to score later in the inning to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Lakers. Bailey Cannon tallied a third run after reaching with a walk to make it 3-0.

The Lakers kept Ashland quiet through 4 innings, allowing only one run. Mercyhurst ran into trouble in the 5th inning, however, as Ashland made their way through the batting order for the third time. Riddled with a few hits, a walk, and a couple of errors, Ashland was able to push 7 more runs across in the inning to make the score 8-4. Ashland was then able to retire 6 of 7 batters to close out the contest.

Highlights

Kacie Irwin and Brianne Egelston each recorded 2 hits for the Lakers and scored a run.

Game Two: Upper Iowa

The day didn't get any better for the Lakers as they dropped their second game 6-1. Mercyhurst was again able to start the game efficiently, as Madison Fry-Fachet came around to make the game 1-0 in the first.

Hits were then hard to come by, and Upper Iowa benefited from timely hitting and some unfortunate Laker errors to keep a comfortable lead all the way to the finish line.
