Auburndale, FL- After a day off, the Mercyhurst Softball team returned to action in Auburndale, FL. The Lakers first took on Bemidji State University before challenging Minnesota State, Mankato in the night cap. Battling some tough weather conditions throughout the day, Mercyhurst came away with a split, beating Bemidji in 8 innings, and losing to Minnesota State.
Game One: Bemidji
It was a defensive battle for much of the game, as both pitchers kept the opposition off balance. Mikaela Schramski got the nod for the Lakers and was dominant from within the circle. The Senior from Osceola, Indiana threw a complete game, allowing 3 hits and 1 run while recording the win. Schramski's teammates finally found the scoreboard in extra innings, plating three runs, thanks to efficient at bats from the top of the order.
To start the 8th, Madison Fry-Fachet found the base paths and moved to second as Neena Pietripaolo reached successfully. Brianne Egelston then came up big with a double to plate the first Laker runners. Francesca Latino also came in clutch for the victors, lacing a single to add another run in the 8th.
Despite a run crossing for Bemidji State, the Lakers were able to lock it down to secure a big bounce back victory, 3-1.
Highlights
Schramski recorded 5 strikeouts in the win. Brianne Egelston went 3-4 from the plate, which included a double and 2 RBI's. Madison Fry-Fachet remained steady for the Lakers going 2-4 with a walk.
Game Two: Minnesota State
The Lakers failed to get going in the night cap, falling to Minnesota State in 5 innings, 8-0. Mercyhurst kept Minnesota State quiet through the first couple of innings, giving up only 2 runs. They found their stride in the fifth inning however, tallying 6 more runs to put the game out of reach for the Lakers.
Kacie Irwin was the lone bright spot for the Lakers offensively, going 2 for 2 from the plate
