Lakers Anchor a Spot in CHA Finals

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team hosted a winner take all game three against Robert Morris in the CHA Semifinals. The Lakers ran away with a 6-1 win over the Colonials. The Lakers advance to the CHA Finals, where they will take on the defending champion Penn State Nittany Lions.  

How it Happened 

The Lakers opened the games scoring with a goal by Kylee Mahoney. A few minutes later, the Lakers added another, this one coming off the stick of Chantal Ste-Croix. The Lakers held a 2-0 lead. Late in the Lakers took a penalty that put the Colonials on the power-play. The Lakers power-play kill unit did its job and got back to 5 on 5. Just before the end of the period, Thea Johansson beat the goaltender for a goal, extending their lead to 3-0. 

In the second period, the Lakers scored twice to add to their lead. The first goal came after Sofia Nuutinen blocked a shot and streaked down the ice to score a goal that extended the Lakers lead. Thea Johansson led Nuutinen with a perfect pass down the ice. The second goal came from Chantal Ste-Croix, her second of the game. After two periods, the Lakers led 5-0. 

The Colonials got on the board in the third period, ending the Lakers bid for a shutout. The Colonials goal came off the stick of Shailynn Snow. The Lakers added an empty net goal at the end, courtesy of Vanessa Upson.        

Highlights 

Vanessa Upson tallied two more points in today's win, bringing her series total to seven points.  

Thea Johansson (1G, 1A), Mary Kromer (2A), and Chantal Ste-Croix (2G) all had two points in the game.  

Chantal Ste-Croix scored two goals in the win.  

Kylee Mahoney scored the goal that opened the scoring for the Lakers. 

Marielle Parks, Sara Boucher, and Jade Maisonneuve all had assists. 

Ena Nystrøm stopped 31 shots and grabbed her 20th win of the season.  

Sofia Ljung blocked a team-high four shots.  

The Lakers secure win number 20, making it three-straight years the Lakers have reached that win total.
