University Park, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team traveled to State College for the CHA Championship Game against the Penn State Nittany Lions. A first period goal by the Nittany Lions was the only scoring needed in a 1-0 win over the Lakers.
How it Happened
The Nittany Lions grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Mya Vaslet. Pressure was applied early by the Nittany Lions as they outshot the Lakers 16-5 in the first period. Katie DeSa made an incredible save on a shot by Thea Johansson that would've tied the game late in the first. Coming back the other way, Ena Nystrøm made a miraculous save, keeping the puck between her legs.
The second period was the Ena Nystrøm show. Nystrøm stopped 23 shots during the period, bringing her game total to 38. The Lakers kept the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard in the period and got to the third period down by just one.
After only putting up nine shots on goal through two periods, the Lakers put 15 shots on goal in the third, outshooting the Nittany Lions 15-7. A late push by the Lakers wasn't enough as the Nittany Lions won the CHA Tournament for the second year in a row.
