Erie, Pa. — Mercyhurst and Robert Morris began a home and home series at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. It ended up a tough 5-2 loss for the Lakers despite outplaying Robert Morris in different areas of the game.
How It Happened
The Lakers got off to a hot start, looking commanding on the puck in the Robert Morris zone. They tested the Colonials goalie, Francis Boisvert, early after getting 10 shots off within the first ten minutes. A couple minutes later it would be the visiting team that got on the score sheet first though. Tanner Klimpke got it started with an across ice pass from Walter Zacher, allowing Klimpke to ring it off the post in the top corner of the net. Under a minute later former captain of the Lakers, and current Colonials captain, Rylee St. Onge doubling the RMU lead. After the puck pinged around the zone, Dallas Tulip was able to find St. Onge in front of goal to sink it in. They grabbed one one more before the close of the period, with Zacher laying one back for Klimpke, who's shot was saved by Owen Say, but Cameron Garvey was there to clean up the spill sending it to the second period a 3-0 game.
Mercyhurst continued their aggressive play into the second period, not letting the deficit deter them. Their hustle would finally be rewarded close to the halfway mark of the period. Jake Beaune slung the puck down the length of the ice, leaving Ryan Coughlin to collect the bounce off the boards, who found Barrett Brooks in front of goal to smash it home to make it a 3-1 game. The 3 goal deficit would eventually be returned to Robert Morris on a power play goal through Garvey's second of the game. Michael Craig sent it down ice to Jackson Reineke, with his shot eventually being rebounded in by Garvey. With one period left it was 4-1 Colonials lead.
The third and final period seemed like it was going to turn into a standstill with neither team being able to get anything in the final third of the ice. That would quickly change ten minutes in. Garrett Dahm was able to free the puck from a cluster behind the RMU net to Will Margel, allowing him to slide it to Beaune at the point for a slapshot in the back of the net to pull one back. Mercyhurst went all out for the remainder of the game, even pulling the goalie in the final minute. The move would eventually result in Garvey sliding it from center ice, solidifying his hat trick and a 5-2 defeat for the Lakers.
