Syracuse, NY. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey looked to extend their winning streak to three games as they did battle with the Syracuse Orange. After trailing 2-1 in the third period, the Lakers got goals from Sofia Ljung and Thea Johansson that would end up being the difference in a 3-2 win over the Orange.  

How it Happened 

The Lakers got out to an early 1-0 lead courtesy of a Sara Boucher goal. The Lakers continued to put the pressure on the Orange throughout the first period but couldn't capitalize. The Lakers held a 1-0 lead after one period of play. 

Early in the second period, the Orange got on the board. Tatum White found the back of the net, tying the game up at one. As play continued, it was the Orange's turn to apply a little bit of pressure. At the 14:09 mark of the second period, the Orange took the lead on a Nea Tervonen goal. The Lakers went into the second period intermission down by one.  

At the halfway point in the third period, the Orange still held the lead, but there was still a lot of time left in this game. At 13:42 in the third, the Lakers struck. Sofia Ljung found the back of the net, tying the game at two. Penalties on both sides made it 4 on 4 late in the period. Shortly after the penalties, the Lakers scored again. This time it was Thea Johansson, who beat the goaltender, giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead. The Laker defense stood tough in the final minutes, keeping the Orange from tying the game.    

Highlights 

Sara Boucher scored her 17th goal of the season. Boucher has scored in back-to-back games and now has five points in the last two games.  

Sofia Nuutinen recorded two more assists tonight, bringing her season total to 19.  

With an assist tonight, Vanessa Upson needs four more points to reach 100 for her career.  

After a two-game absence, Thea Johansson netted her 15th goal of the season. 

Sofia Ljung found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. 

Ena Nystrøm stopped 26 shots and got the win. Nystrøm now sits at 99 games played, and 49 wins in her career.
