Lakers Edged by #12 Penn State

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team came up just short in a tightly contested 3-2 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Despite a two-goal performance from Kylee Mahoney, the Lakers couldn't overcome a late third-period tally from Penn State's Tessa Janecke.

How It Happened:

Penn State struck first at 8:07 in the opening period, as Alyssa Machado netted an even-strength goal assisted by Tessa Janecke and Maddy Christian. Mercyhurst quickly responded at 15:46, with Kylee Mahoney scoring her first goal of the game, assisted by Thea Johansson and Sofia Nuutinen

The second period saw more back-and-forth action. Tessa Janecke put the Nittany Lions back on top with an unassisted goal at 14:22. However, the Lakers capitalized on a power-play opportunity late in the period when Mahoney buried her second goal at 19:31, with assists from Sydney Pedersen and Mary Sweetapple, tying the game at 2-2 heading into the final frame.

In the third period, Janecke struck again for Penn State, scoring the game-winning goal unassisted at 12:06. Despite a strong push and several late opportunities, the Lakers were unable to find the equalizer.

Notable Performances:

  • Kylee Mahoney lit the lamp twice for the Lakers, including once on the power play.

  • Sofia Nuutinen recorded her third assist of the weekend on Kylee Mahoney's first goal.  Nuutinen has points in five of her last seven games.

Mercyhurst will return to action after the first of the year when they host Saint Michaels College on January 4th and 5th.
