Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell 4-2 to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The game featured a strong comeback attempt from the Lakers, including a power-play goal from Julia Schalin, but Penn State held on to remain unbeaten in AHA play.
How It Happened:
After a scoreless first period, Penn State opened the scoring midway through the second. Maddy Christian struck twice for the Nittany Lions, with goals at 12:49 and 15:55, assisted by Tessa Janecke, Kendall Butze, and Alyssa Machado. The Lakers responded late in the period at 16:57 when Makayla Javier scored her third goal of the season, assisted by Kylee Mahoney and Sofia Nuutinen, to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Mercyhurst tied the game early in the third period at 00:43 when Julia Schalin scored a power-play goal, her sixth of the season, off assists from Vanessa Upson and Sofia Nuutinen. However, Penn State regained the lead at 3:58 with a game-winning goal from Grace Outwater, assisted by Brianna Brooks and Leah Stecker. The Nittany Lions sealed the victory with an empty-net goal by Tessa Janecke at 17:56.
