Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Men's Ice Hockey team showcased resilience on Saturday night, battling to a 3-3 tie against the RPI Engineers before falling in the shootout. The game featured multiple lead changes, with RPI erasing a late deficit to force extra time.
How It Happened:
The Engineers opened the scoring at 6:05 of the first period, with Jeremie Payant finding the back of the net for RPI. Mercyhurst quickly responded on the power play at 8:44, as Dominik Bartecko scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Steven Agriogianis and Caleb Price. RPI regained the lead with a power-play goal from John Beaton at 15:58, closing the period at 2-1.
The Lakers came out strong in the second period, with Boris Skalos tying the game at 2-2 at 9:27, assisted by Sean James and Steven Agriogianis. Just two minutes later, Will Margel gave Mercyhurst their first lead of the night, scoring at 11:31 with assists from Mickey Burns and Ryan Coughlin.
RPI tied the game in the third period at 14:58, as Dovar Tinling capitalized on the power play. Neither team could find the go-ahead goal in regulation or overtime, sending the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, RPI's Tyler Hotson scored the lone goal, giving the Engineers a 1-0 win in the shootout.
