Volleyball Heads to the Windy City

Chicago, IL. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Volleyball team is set to take on the Chicago State Cougars in a conference matchup this Friday and Saturday at the Jacoby Dickens Center.  The start time for the match on Friday is set for 6:00 PM.  

Laker Outlook 

Mercyhurst enters the match with a 3-17 overall record, including a 2-8 mark in NEC play. The Lakers have seen standout performances from Paige Miller, who leads the team with 185 kills, averaging 2.68 kills per set. Alia Mastromatteo has directed the offense with 256 assists, while Kaitlin Murphy has anchored the defense at the net with a team-high 36 total blocks. Defensively, Kelsie Gaiter-Davis leads in digs, tallying 205 so far this season. Mercyhurst will aim to improve its .138 hitting percentage against a tough Chicago State defense. 

A Look at Chicago State 

Chicago State enters the matchup with a 13-9 overall record, including a strong 9-1 record in conference play. The Cougars' offense is led by Patrycja Lagida, who has posted 258 kills with an average of 3.31 kills per set. Karly Klaer has also contributed significantly with 207 kills. Wiktoria Zagumny leads Chicago State's setting efforts with an impressive 719 assists, averaging 9.10 assists per set. 

Defensively, the Cougars boast a .187 hitting percentage and have been dominant in blocking, averaging 1.65 blocks per set. Julieta Sandez and Berenice Almeyda lead the blocking front with a combined 121 blocks. Chicago State's service game has also been strong, with the team averaging 1.75 aces per set, which could challenge Mercyhurst's reception. 

What to Watch For 

  • Offensive Showdown: Mercyhurst's Paige Miller and Chicago State's Patrycja Lagida lead their respective teams in kills and will be focal points for each side's offense. 

  • Blocking Battle: With both teams relying on strong defense, Kaitlin Murphy of Mercyhurst and Julieta Sandez of Chicago State will be key players to watch at the net. 

  • Service Pressure: Chicago State's serving has been a weapon, and Mercyhurst's reception will need to be sharp to counter the Cougars' service game.
