Box Score Berkley, Ca.- Mercyhurst traveled over 2,500 miles to square off with Cal, their first Power Four opponent, on Wednesday night. The Lakers fell short 81-55 against one of the Atlantic Coastal Conference's members as they completed game two of their four game west coast trip.
Â
How it Happened:
Mercyhurst got off to a quick start against a Cal team that has lost just one game so far this season. Senior
Aidan Reichert helped knot things at two before
Max Jusianiec gave them their first lead of the day just over two minutes in. After a pair of
Shemar Rathan-Mayes free throws however, the Lakers went scoreless for four minutes of action. In that span, the Golden Bears went on an 8-0 run that saw them take a lead they wouldn't surrender again. At the halfway point, a Mady Sissoko jumper gave Cal an eight-point lead that continued to grow over the final ten minutes of the first half. A 10-0 run in the final four minutes helped Cal enter the half up 41-23.
Â
Coming out of half, the Lakers were able to get the lead back down to 15, but it seemed like every time they converted, the Golden Bears went right back down the court and did the same.
Bernie Blunt III had five points in the first seven minutes of the second half, but Cal was still able to jump out to a 55-35 lead. Mercyhurst managed to just score just 20 more points throughout the remainder of the second half as Cal walked away with their sixth victory in the young season.
Â
Highlights:
Aidan Reichert tallied 10 points as he shot 40% from the field on Wednesday. Reichert, who surpassed 1,000 career points on Sunday, has had double-digit points in four straight games and six of eight games this season. Blunt led the Lakers with 11 points on just five shots.
Â
Next Game:
Mercyhurst travels to Sacramento on Saturday, where they'll battle Sacramento State in their third game of their west coast trip. The action kicks off at 8:00 p.m. and can be caught on ESPN+.
