Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team battled to a 2-1 victory over RIT on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Strong defensive play and timely scoring lifted the Lakers to 6-7-1 overall and 4-1-0 in AHA action, as goaltender Jorden Mattison made 29 saves to preserve the win.
How It Happened:
Mercyhurst broke the deadlock late in the first period when Julia Schalin lit the lamp, scoring an even-strength goal at 15:56, assisted by Mary Sweetapple and Vanessa Upson. The Lakers doubled their lead midway through the second period at 11:08, with Vanessa Upson netting the game-winning goal. Julia Schalin and Sofia Nuutinen picked up assists on the play.
RIT responded in the third period, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with a goal from Emma Pickering at 7:56, assisted by Annie Burks. Despite heavy offensive pressure from the Tigers late in the game, Mercyhurst's defense stood tall, with Mattison making key saves to secure the victory.
