The Lakers Fall to Youngstown State in a Hard-Fought Battle

Youngstown, OH.- The Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team traveled to Youngstown State University to take on the undefeated Penguins who defended their home court defeating the Lakers, 64-56. 

How it Happened:

Mercyhurst opened scoring this morning with a free throw made by Grace Clary followed by a left-handed layup made by Jenna Van Schaik three minutes later. The Lakers continued to work on and off the ball for the remainder of the quarter, with critical shots made by Allyson Ross and Bailey Kuhns. The Lakers closed out the first quarter trailing the Penguins with a score of 15-8.

Early in the second, the Lakers opened scoring once again by Grace Clary. This was followed by a great play by Jenna Van Schaik who knocked down her third three-ball of the season. The Lakers played an effective game defensively this quarter, leading in rebounds, holding the Penguins to no more than a 10-point lead. The Lakers closed the half with back-to-back layups from  Allyson Ross and Erica Hall and a jump shot scored by Bailey Kuhns. The score going into halftime was 30-24, with Youngstown State holding the advantage.

Kuhns continued the effort in the third quarter with a relentless performance on the attack. She totaled fourteen points over the course of ten minutes with clinical shots both in the paint and from the free-throw line. Jenna Van Schaik also contributed to the scoring effort, sinking two free throws late in the quarter. 

Multiple Lakers contributed to scoring in the fourth quarter, including Kuhns, Van Schaik, Hernandez, and McConnell. Despite Mercyhurst's persistent effort both offensively and defensively, they were unable to secure the win. 

Highlights: 

Bailey Kuhns led the Lakers in points today reaching a single-season high this season with 22, followed by Jenna Van Schaik and Cici Hernandez who both totaled 9. Van Schaik also led the team in assists with 5 for the afternoon.

The Lakers will take on Bryant and Stratton College at home on Sunday, November 24th.
