Mercyhurst Esports Overwatch Team Dominates Week One, Clinches Nail-Biter Victory in Week Two

10/8/2024 3:40:00 PM

Mercyhurst University's Esports program has made an emphatic debut in the ECAC, with their Overwatch team delivering back-to-back victories that have positioned them as serious contenders. Week one saw the team, led by Director Mathew 'Septilence' Corfee, make a memorable entrance by crushing Saint Joseph's University in a flawless 3-0 sweep. This victory, marking their first-ever tournament as a unit, left little room for doubt about their potential.

The squad comprised of: - Joey "Yeomso" Baronick (Tank) - Mason "Headlink" Blakeman (Damage) - Noah "Zoah" Blake (Damage) - Tyler "SmoothOper8r" Moritzen (Support) - Ash "Ming_Meii" Stanton (Support) - Valentine "Myvivisection" Kibler (Sub) - Ash "Astra_Aria" Simkovic (Sub)

The team executed a seamless game plan from start to finish, showing off not just their individual skills but also impressive teamwork despite only having played together a handful of times. Every player brought their best, with pinpoint communication, clutch plays, and sharp coordination leading to Saint Joseph's downfall. The performance set the tone for the season, establishing the Hurst team as a force to be reckoned with. Even though these students had only played together a handful of times they were already going toe to toe with established collegiate teams and winning.

After a dominant 3-0 sweep in their week one debut, Mercyhurst University's Overwatch team faced a heart-pounding match in week two. Mercyhurst Esports, once again proving their resilience and skill, overcame King's College in a 3-2 victory that showcased not only their tactical prowess but their ability to handle chaos when the odds were stacked against them.

The match opened with a strong performance from Mercyhurst on Nepal, where they took an early 1-0 lead, showing dominance in control-point gameplay. Joey "Yeomso" Baronick and Tyler "SmoothOper8r" Moritzen worked as team leaders to help their teammates coordinate and execute perfect attacks to ensure King's College couldn't reach the point in time. However, the momentum soon shifted. On King's Row, King's College lived up to their namesake and responded with fierce determination. Despite Mercyhurst's best efforts, they were outpaced, and King's College secured the second map to even the series. The tide didn't turn in Mercyhurst's favor on the third map either, as Esperança saw Mercyhurst struggling to find their rhythm in the face of a relentless King's College assault. With two consecutive losses, Mercyhurst found themselves down 2-1, facing elimination.

It was during this break in the series where a good team became a great one. Many teams and students could have folded under the pressure and admit defeat. Many would have let their mental attitude slip and become upset or angry with their team. Mercyhurst Esports Overwatch however used this as an opportunity to learn. They used the break between maps to gather their thoughts, stabilize their emotions and began coordinating a plan on how to stay afloat when staring their first series loss of the season in the face.

This team doesn't give up easily. Heading into the fourth map, New Junk City, Mercyhurst Esports regrouped and delivered when it mattered most. In a chaotic and hard-fought battle, they clutched out a thrilling, last-minute victory, tying the series 2-2 and forcing a decisive fifth map. The energy was palpable, and the intensity reached a fever pitch.

Then disaster struck.

Halfway through the fifth and final map, Joey "Yeomso" Baronick's game unexpectedly crashed, removing him from the match and leaving Mercyhurst in a devastating 4v5 scenario. With their backs pinned against the wall, the remaining four players—Tyler "SmoothOper8r" Moritzen, Noah "Zoah" Blake, Ash "Ming_Meii" Stanton, and Mason "Headlink" Blakeman—battled valiantly, doing everything they could to stay alive and hold on desperately waiting for their tank to reconnect. Defeat seemed inevitable. As King's College pressed their advantage, the odds were against Mercyhurst. But just when it seemed like all hope was lost, the entire lobby crashed, resulting in the map being called a draw. This was nothing short of a miracle.

The unexpected lobby crash gave Mercyhurst the miracle they desperately needed. It allowed Joey "Yeomso" Baronick to reboot his game, return to the match, and rejoin his team for the tiebreaker. With a newfound determination and a full squad back in action, Mercyhurst stormed into the tiebreaker map with renewed energy. Baronick, now back in the fray, led the charge with incredible gamesense and flawless shot-calling, driving the team to an exhilarating victory.

With the final score at 3-2, Mercyhurst not only secured the win but also demonstrated the power of teamwork, perseverance, and never giving up, no matter how dire the circumstances. This victory brings their record to 2-0, maintaining their undefeated streak heading into week three, where they will face Stockton University, currently sitting at 1-1. With momentum firmly on their side after such a dramatic comeback, Mercyhurst Esports Overwatch is looking stronger than ever. Stockton may pose a challenge, but if Mercyhurst's week two performance is any indication, this team is prepared to face whatever comes their way. Week three is fast approaching, and fans are eager to see if Mercyhurst can keep their winning streak alive. One thing is certain: after pulling off an extraordinary victory under the most chaotic of circumstances, this team has proven they have the heart, skill, and determination to handle anything the ECAC throws at them.
