Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Men's Ice Hockey team came into game two looking to earn a series split but ultimately fell to Bowling Green in a 5-4 overtime thriller on Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers held the lead multiple times, but Bowling Green's Brett Pfoh scored the game-winner just 1:13 into overtime.
How It Happened:
Bowling Green struck first at 10:46 of the opening period with Brett Pfoh netting an even-strength goal, assisted by Ville Immonen. Mercyhurst answered back quickly, as Jake Beaune tied the game at 12:01 with a goal assisted by Ryan Coughlin and Barrett Brooks. The Lakers grabbed the lead before the period ended, with Dustin Geregach scoring at 19:33, assisted by Riley Fitzgerald and Caleb Price, giving Mercyhurst a 2-1 edge heading into the second period.
The Lakers extended their lead in the second period when Riley Fitzgerald found the back of the net at 17:58, assisted by Barrett Brooks and Boris Skalos, making it 3-1. However, Bowling Green began their comeback in the third period with Ville Immonen scoring at 2:42, followed by Brody Waters adding a power-play goal at 5:18 to tie the game at 3-3.
Mercyhurst responded with Tyler DesRochers scoring at 8:22 to regain the lead, but Bowling Green tied it once more at 8:49 with a goal by Ethan Scardina. Neither team could break the tie in regulation, leading to overtime, where Pfoh scored his second goal of the night to secure the win for the Falcons.
