Lakers Drop Game Two at #11 St. Cloud

St. Cloud, MN. – The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team looked for a series split as they took on St. Cloud State in game two of their weekend series.  A goal in the first and second periods by the Huskies were the difference in a 2-0 loss for the Lakers.

How it Happened

Just like yesterday's game, a lot of back and forth to start off the first period. About five minutes into the first, the Huskies took a tripping penalty, but St. Cloud killed the Lakers powerplay and kept it scoreless. Around the halfway mark of the first period, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Dayle Ross. Another Husky penalty gave the Lakers a powerplay. St. Cloud killed Mercyhurst's powerplay, remained 1-0 Huskies. The first period came to an end, and it was 1-0 St. Cloud.

Within two minutes of the second period, the Lakers took a tripping penalty. With six seconds left on the Huskies powerplay, they found the back of the net and made it 2-0. After two periods of play, the Lakers trailed the Huskies 2-0.  Magdalena Luggin stopped 14 shots in the period.

The Huskies pressure continued into the third period; the Lakers looked to change that around and put some pressure on them. Magdalena Luggin made some key saves to keep the score where it was. After a big scrum in front of the net, both the Huskies and the Lakers found themselves in the box for crosschecking after the whistle. Neither team capitalized on the 4 on 4 and the score remained the same. Time expired and the Lakers fell to the Huskies 2-0.

Highlights

In her first collegiate start, Magdalena Luggin stopped 31 shots (13-14-9) in the game.

Vanessa Upson led the Lakers with five shots on goal.  Upson also went 12-7 in the face-off dot.

Next Up

The Lakers look to get back in the win column when they hit the road again next week as they travel to Canton, New York to take on #8 Saint Lawrence University in a two-game series. Puck drop for game one is set for 3pm.
