Erie, PA- The Lakers scored early and often this afternoon, enjoying a 55-0 victory over the Buffalo State Bengals for what was Mercyhurst University's Homecoming weekend. Mercyhurst improves their record to 2-4 and will now look to carry momentum into NEC play.
Â
Highlights
Â
In front of a packed crowd of past and present Lakers, Mercyhurst didn't waste any time finding the scoreboard. To kick things off, Urena led the Laker offense down the field and found
Rylan Davison for a 7-yard touchdown reception. After a promising drive to begin the game, the Laker defense made a stand and allowed the offense to march down the field once more, this time securing three points off the foot of
Nathan Nagucki to make the score 10-0. The big first quarter didn't end there for the Lakers as standout wide receiver,
Cameron Barmore, found the endzone with just under 10 seconds left in the frame. The quarter ended with Mercyhurst on top, 17-0.
Â
After converting three times for 17 points in the first quarter, the Lakers did it again in the second.
Braydon Black and
Chaz Davis were touchdown recipients this time around as
Nathan Nagucki added a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the second. The Laker defense was stout the whole half, stuffing the Bengals rushing attack at the line of scrimmage and defending the pass beautifully. The Laker defense even managed to block a punt, despite an unsuccessful recovery.
Â
The 34-point lead at the half was one of utter dominance. Mercyhurst led in total yards with 317, while the Bengals produced just 53 yards of total offense in the half.
Â
The beginning of the third quarter cooled down a bit, but
Adam Urena got things going again, finding his brother
Austin Urena for a 41-yard touchdown. The 41-point lead held firm as the two teams headed into the final quarter. The Lakers continued to pour it on however as
Cameron Barmore and
Braydon Black each recorded their second touchdown of the day to put a stamp on the day, 55-0.
