Erie, PA- Mercyhurst Field Hockey fell short today as they took Slippery Rock University to overtime but ultimately fell by a score of 2-1.
How it HappenedÂ
The Lakers played strong in the first half, allowing only one goal. Slippery Rock struck first as they scored in the first quarter, making the score 1-0 going into the second quarter. The Lakers held Slippery Rock scoreless in the second quarter, making seven saves, and keeping the score 1-0 going into the half. Things started to heat up for the Lakers after the half as they scored early in the third quarter to tie the game 1-1. The game-tying goal came from junior Delfina Magro. Mercyhurst held up defensively as well, holding Slippery Rock scoreless again and making three saves. Neither team would budge in the final quarter as both teams were held scoreless and kept the score 1-1 to force overtime. The Lakers fought hard in overtime but could not hold on as Slippery Rock scored after seven minutes to defeat Mercyhurst by a score of 2-1. The Lakers totaled 10 shots on the day and racked up four defensive saves. Two defensive saves were made by Delfina Magro and the other two were made by junior Jen Kemp. Senior goalkeeper Kayla Desormeau totaled six saves on the day.Â
