Box Score Fairfield, CT- The Mercyhurst Football team traveled to Fairfield, CT this afternoon to take on the Pioneers of Sacred Heart. On a beautiful fall afternoon, the Lakers fell short of the Pioneers, 31-14. Mercyhurst is now 2-6 on the season.
How it Happened
After going three and out in their first offensive series of the game, the Lakers fell behind early as the Pioneers used 6 plays to drive 46 yards to paydirt to take a 7-0 lead.
Sacred Heart then took a two-possession lead in the second quarter as John Michalski found Kevin McGuire for a 7-yard touchdown completion to make the score 14-0.
After punting the ball away midway through the second quarter, the Laker defensive came up with a huge turnover to give the Mercyhurst offense the football in Pioneer territory. The drive stalled however, as the Sacred Heart defense forced a turnover on downs on their own 18-yard line.
Xavier Leigh then extended the Sacred Heart lead with a 22-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-0.
The Lakers finally found some offensive rhythm to end the first half, as Adam Urena found Ayron Rodriguez for a 9-yard touchdown completion, narrowing the score to 21-7 as the two teams entered halftime.
Mercyhurst came out of halftime with some urgency, forcing a Sacred Heart three and out. Brian Trobel then sparked a Mercyhurst drive with a 39-yard run to get the Lakers back into Pioneer territory. The drive resulted in another turnover on downs however, which led to a Pioneer touchdown, extending the lead to 28-7.
Despite the deficit, the Lakers didn't quit. From their own 27-yard line, the Mercyhurst offense used 13 plays to drive 73 yards to another score. This time, Adam Urena found his brother, Austin Urena, for a 10-yard touchdown completion, making the score 28-14.
Sacred Heart managed to find the scoreboard once more, converting a 36-yard field goal to make the score 31-14, which held firm for a final score.

-Cameron Barmore caught 9 passes for 96 yards
-Brian Trobel rushed 17 times for 96 yards

-Defensively, Zach Hill led the Lakers with 8 total tackles, while Adrian Lewis recovered a fumble.
