Moon Township, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team hit the road for a CHA matchup with Robert Morris. The Lakers scored six unanswered goals in a 6-1 win over the Colonials. The Lakers improve to 12-12-1 overall and 8-3 in CHA play, and extend their winning streak to four games.
How it Happened
The Colonials went on the power play early in the first period after in interference penalty on the Lakers. During the power play, Ena Nystrøm made a few key saves to keep the game scoreless. The Lakers killed off the penalty and got back to full strength. Just a few minutes later it was the Lakers turn on the power play. With just three seconds left on the advantage, the Lakers got on the board. It was Olivia Cvar who gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The Lakers had opportunities to add on in the first but couldn't get anything to go. The Lakers held a 1-0 lead at the end of one.
Vanessa Upson gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead just 1:30 into the second period. The Colonials took a cross checking penalty, which gave the Lakers the power play opportunity. Upson punched it home and the Lakers led 2-0. An interference penalty gave the Lakers yet another power play. Sofia Ljung ripped a slap shot from just inside the blue line and it beat the goaltender for the goal. To this point, the Lakers were 3-3 on the power play. A few minutes later, Thea Johansson picked off a pass and had a one on one with the goaltender. Johansson won that matchup, and gave the Lakers a 4-0 lead.
Early in the third period the Lakers added another on the power play. Olivia Cvar scored her second goal of the game to extend the Laker lead to 5-0. Just over a minute later, Vanessa Upson found the back of the net for the second time in the game. It was now 6-0. Late in the period the Colonials got on the board and erased the shutout for Ena Nystrøm.
Highlights
Vanessa Upson recorded goals nine and ten on the season. For Upson it's her third multi-goal game in the past four games.
Olivia Cvar recorded her first three point game of the season. Cvar now has back-to-back games with multiple points.
Sara Boucher finished with two assists. For Boucher it is her second two assist game in the past three games.
Sofia Nuutinen finished with two assists. Nuutinen now has a point in five of her last seven games.
Sofia Ljung had a goal and two assists for her second multi-point game of the season and her first three point game of her career.
Thea Johansson scored a goal for the third straight game. Johansson now has four goals in the past three games.
Ena Nystrøm stopped 19 shots while allowing only one goal. It was Nystrøms's 11th game this year allowing one or fewer goals.
The Lakers went 4-5 on the power play.
The Lakers took 79 shots, with 42 of them going on goal.
