Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Football got their first win of the 2023 season in front of their home crowd Saturday night as they defeated Lock Haven 41-29. A solid effort in the second in third quarters helping lift the Lakers to the 12-point win.
How it Happened
Mercyhurst got on the board first with a touchdown pass to the back of the end zone to Rylan Davison as the senior wide receiver was able to stay in bounds for the score midway through the opening period.
Lock Haven managed to respond late in the first with a touchdown pass of their own to make it a 7-7 game going into the second quarter.
The Lakers began to take over in the second period, outscoring the Bald Eagles 14-3 before the break to claim a 21-10 lead at halftime. Quarterback Adam Urena threw for his second touchdown on the day, hitting Cameron Barmore for 19 yards before Ayron Rodriguez got in on the action as he ran for 15 yards up the middle to give the Lakers their third TD of the day with just under four minutes to go in the half.
Mercyhurst continue to control the game in the third as they managed to grow their lead out even further, going into the final 15 minutes ahead 34-17. Mercyhurst's first possession of the second half set the tone for the rest of the game as they marched down the field for an 11-play 70-yard drive that at up over five minutes, capped off by a rushing score from Jaylen Butera.
Cameron Barmore once again got in on the action for his second score of the day in the team's following possession as Mercyhurst had claimed all the momentum.
Lock Haven tried to pull off the comeback in the final period of play, but it was all for naught. The Bald Eagles managed to 12 points on the board in the fourth with them not being enough in the Mercyhurst victory.
Highlights
Adam Urena put together another very strong performance under center for the Lakers, going 28-33 through the air while throwing for 313 yards and having five touchdowns to his line. His 313 yards through the air is the most by a Mercyhurst QB since Doug Altavilla's 326, helping one of the newest Lakers already begins to rewrite the history books. Cameron Barmore proved to be Urena's favorite target, catching six passes for 70 yards with half of his receptions going for touchdowns. On defense, Christian Taylor led the team in tackled with nine while Camden White secured his first two sacks of the season in a game in which he tallied eight total tackles.
Next Game
Mercyhurst goes back out on the road this upcoming weekend as they are set to travel to Kutztown to see the Golden Bears on Saturday, September 16th in a game set to start at noon.
