Edinboro, Pa. - Mercyhurst made the short trip to see the Fighting Scots to round out the month of September with the Lakers unable to get it done. The two teams played each other even through the first three quarter as the score stood at 24-24 going into the fourth. Edinboro managed to claim the momentum toward the end and outscore Mercyhurst 16-0 in the final frame in the 40-24 loss.
How it Happened
Mercyhurst started off the game well on offense, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the opening frame. The first was a pass from Adam Urena that found Rylan Davison in the back of the end zone to give Mercyhurst the lead, 7-0.Â
Jaylen Butera helped add on with just under three minutes to go in the period for his second touchdown of the season. Edinboro managed to have a rebuttal for the first score, but could not answer for the second as they went into the second period down seven.
The Fighting Scots managed to find their groove in the second as they scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to help them pull ahead. Mercyhurst was able to find the board late in the second with a field goal from Nathan Nagucki to cut it to a four point deficit. Adam Urena found his brother, Austin, later in the second to help the Lakers take a 24-21 lead into the break and give the team some momentum.
The third went by with only three points scored in the frame. Both defenses made the right adjustments coming out the break after a combined 45 points scored in the first half. Edinboro managed to put one through the uprights with 10:51 showing on the game clock to help them tie things up once again, 24-24.Â
The Fighting Scots then claimed the lead with their first play of the fourth quarter. Running back Brian Trobel managed to get inside the five with the final rush of the third quarter and managed to punch it in to begin the final frame to make it a 31-24 game. A special teams mishap by the Lakers led to a safety, helping Edinboro claim the momentum before they scored midway through the fourth to make it 40-24. The Lakers tried to fight back with the little time left on the clock, but were unsuccessful in the loss.
