Canton, NY. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team hit the road for their first road series of the new season as the traveled to Canton, New York for a series with St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence rode a fast start to take game one 5-1.
How it Happened
Before people could get settled into their seats, St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead. It took St. Lawrence just 54 seconds to get the scoring started. The Lakers wanted to get that goal back fast as just 30 seconds later Olivia Cvar ripped a shot that missed just wide. After some time had passed, the Lakers had a few more opportunities that they couldn't convert as Sofia Nuutinen ripped a shot wide of the goal, and Megan McKay did as well. Both sides traded shots for the remainder of the period. At the end of the first period St. Lawrence held a 1-0 lead.
Period two started faster than period one did. St. Lawrence extended the lead with a goal just 53 seconds into the period. A couple minutes later, Thea Johansson got the Lakers on the board with her second goal of the season. Kylee Mahoney added an assist on the goal. Just past the midway point of the period, St. Lawrence added another to extend their lead to 3-1. Late in the period the Lakers were awarded a power-play and looked to find some momentum. Sydney Pedersen ripped a shot that was blocked, Sofia Nuutinen ripped a shot wide, and Thea Johansson had a shot go wide as well. The Lakers couldn't generate anything on the power play and the score stayed 3-1. The period ended and St. Lawrence still held a 3-1 lead.
Early in the third period St. Lawrence added some insurance with another goal to extend their lead to 4-1. The Lakers couldn't generate anything on offense in the third period. St. Lawrence was able to add one later in the period to make the score 5-1. The final seconds ticked off the clock and St. Lawrence captured game one of this weekend series.
