Lakers Drop Heartbreaker to St. Lawrence

Canton, NY. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team looked to bounce back after a game one loss to St. Lawrence. Down 5-2, St. Lawrence scored three goals in under two minutes to tie the game. They would go on to score with 0:02 left in overtime to win 6-5.

How it Happened

Looking to bounce back from a loss the night before, it didn't take the Lakers long to get on the board.  Just two minutes in, Marielle Parks weaved through the defense and ripped a wrist shot top shelf for a goal.  Sofia Ljung and Jade Maisonneuve assisted on the goal.  Just before the end of the first period, the puck was picked up off the boards by Sara Boucher.  Boucher turned and hit a cutting Thea Johansson right in front of the net for a goal.  As the first period came to a close, the Lakers led 2-0.

Early in the second period, St. Lawrence cut into the Laker lead with a goal. Midway through the second period the Lakers added to their lead with a short-handed goal by Vanessa Upson. Megan McKay added an assist. At the end of two periods of play, the Lakers led St. Lawrence 3-1.

Just 2:55 into the third period, Marielle Parks notched her second goal of the game. Grace Nelles added an assist on the goal. A few minutes later, St. Lawrence cut into the Laker lead again with a goal. With 4:45 left on the clock, St. Lawrence pulled their goalie to get an extra skater on the ice. Thea Johansson gathered a bouncing puck and first at the empty net. Johansson scored and gave the Lakers a 5-2 lead. With under two minutes left, the Lakers took a cross-checking penalty. With a 5 on 4 advantage, St. Lawrence scored to make it 5-3. 27 seconds later, St. Lawrence pulled their goalie, and found the back of the net again to make it 5-4. Once again, St. Lawrence pulled their goalie to get the extra skater out on the ice. The Lakers did everything they could to prevent a goal. Sydney Pedersen blocked a shot, Sara Boucher blocked a shot, Ena Nystrom made a save, but the Lakers couldn't get the puck out of the zone and St. Lawrence gathered a loose puck and scored with 0:03 left on the clock to tie the game.

In overtime, both sides traded great opportunities to win it, but neither could convert. With 0:02 left on the clock a loose puck found the stick of a St. Lawrence player, who was able to score and win the game for St. Lawrence 6-5.
