Lakers Improve to 2-0 with Series Sweep

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team looked to complete the series sweep of Post. A second straight shutout led the Lakers to a 2-0 win in game two and a series sweep.

How it Happened

It didn't take long for the Lakers to get on the board this Sunday afternoon. Just two minutes in, Post couldn't clear the puck and Henlee Mahoney found a dribbling puck and found Thea Johansson who then found Kylee Mahoney for the goal. The Mahoney-to-Mahoney connection is starting early this season as the sisters combine for an early goal. After the goal, the Lakers had a number of opportunities to add on but couldn't get one to go. Vanessa Upson ripped a shot from the point and the Post goaltender made a nice save and covered up the puck. At the end of the first period the Lakers held a 1-0 lead. The Lakers outshot Post 22-6 in the period. Ena Nystrom stood tall in the crease for the Lakers as she saved six shots she faced.

At the midway point in the second period, the Lakers had a great scoring chance as Emmi Mourujarvi grabbed the puck and raced to the other end and hit Vanessa Upson right in front of the goal. The Post goaltender did just enough to keep that puck from going in. At the twelve-minute mark in the second period the Lakers added another. The puck was dug out of the corner by Sofia Nuutinen, who got it to Sara Boucher, Boucher hit Vanessa Upson who buried a beautiful wrist shot into the back of the net. With the assist on the goal, Sara Boucher recorded her 100th career point. A couple of face-offs and an interference penalty later and we reached the end of the second period. The Lakers lead Post 2-0.

Early in the third period, Sofia Nuutinen had a great look right in front of the net but couldn't get it past the goaltender. A few minutes later Post had a nice rush towards the net, but a bouncing puck found the mitt of Ena Nystrom. The Lakers continued to push throughout the entire period. They had multiple looks to try and tack on another goal but couldn't convert. Sydney Pedersen had a slap shot miss just wide of the mark later in the third period. Post tried to make a late push in the final seconds, putting a shot into the net but Ena Nystrom threw her stick at it and knocked it away. The final seconds ticked off the clock and the Lakers came away with a 2-0 victory.
