Van Horn's Hat Trick Leads Lakers Past Gannon

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team took their 4-1 record into McConnell Family Stadium this evening to take on the Golden Knights of Gannon. With intensity at an all-time high, the Lakers outscored Gannon 4-2 and improved their record to 5-1 on the year.

How it Happened:

Only twelve minutes into the match, Corinne Morgan advanced a perfect ball and found Karah Van Horn who beat the keeper to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

It wasn't long until the same two Lakers hooked up again to extend the Mercyhurst lead to 2-0. Using her electric speed, Corinne Morgan beat the Gannon defense and centered a beautiful pass, which led to a Karah Van Horn tap in.

The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime as Maddie Elbro and company made it difficult for Gannon the entire half. Elbro recorded five saves in the first half.

Corinne Morgan and Karah Van Horn weren't done yet. Only seven minutes into the second half, the two Lakers rekindled their connection for a third time. Morgan created space once again and found Van Horn in front of the net for her third goal of the night.

Madison Hoover then joined in on the fun with a bullet that found the back of the goal. The conversion extended the Laker lead to 4-0.

Gannon got on the board just over midway through the second half as Logan Nicklas chipped in a ball over the heads of the Laker defense.

Nicklas found the back of net once more with just under ten minutes left to play. Her second of the night made the score 4-2 in favor of the Lakers. That score remained until the final horn.

Coach Rich Wall commented on his team's performance and stated "I think the biggest thing is that we focused on us and stayed in the moment. We did a very good job of weathering the storm today and continued to play our game."

Highlights:

Karah Van Horn continued her hot week with a hat trick and remains a consistent force for the Lakers. Corinne Morgan also continued her strong play by adding three assists to her season stat line. Morgan now tallies three goals and three assists on the year.

Madison Hoover scored her first goal of the season to go along with her three assists.

Maddie Elbro totaled 6 saves in the win.

When asked about the offensive production so far this season, Karah Van Horn commented that "the offense has been working hard on finding each other and on building chemistry, and we were able to prove that tonight."

Next Up:

The Lakers remain on the road for their next matchup as they travel to Indiana, PA to take on the Crimson Hawks of IUP on Saturday September 23rd. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM
