Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Field Hockey celebrated their senior class Saturday afternoon against Bloomsburg with Mercyhurst falling short in the matchup. The Lakers fell behind early on and, despite a goal late in the fourth, fell 4-1.
How it Happened
The Huskies fired the opening salvo of the game in the fourth minute of the game as Meg Barnard found the back of the cage to take a 1-0 lead. From there, Mercyhurst's defense had a bend but don't break mentality as they did not allow a goal for another 23 minutes. Bloomsburg, however, did manage to score once more in the first half as they took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Huskies picked up right where they left off as they opened up the third with a goal with just over 13 minutes expired from the second half before another goal five minutes into the fourth.Â
Mercyhurst did manage to get on the board and avoid the shutout thanks to senior Jenna Cavalieri. After a save from the Huskies keeper, Cavalieri got the rebound and was able to put the ball in the back of the cage.
Unfortunately, that was all the Lakers could muster in the game in the 4-1 final.
Highlights
Cavalieri grabbed the lone goal of the game for the Lakers, giving her six on the season to lead the team. She is followed by Ellie Schau with five while Lexi Odrobina and Rachel Kosowski have two apiece to round out the top three. Kayla Desormeau added eight saves to her line while allowing four goals. She now has 35 saves on the season, allowing 3.67 goals per game.
Next Game
Mercyhurst goes on the road for their next two games as they go to Kutztown on Saturday, September 23rd, followed by a matchup with Mansfield on Wednesday, September 27th, for a 3:00 p.m. start.
