Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a matchup against Goldey-Beacom as the reigning PSAC tournament champions handled business with a 6-0 win over the Lightning to help Head Coach Austin Solomon capture his first win
How it Happened
It didn't take long for the Lakers to get on the board. After a few corner kicks that didn't result in anything by the Lakers, they were able to get on the scoreboard as Andreas Rossak was able to find the back of the net on a beautiful pass from Luis Felipe Santos.
Shortly after the Lakers were able to find the back of the net again. Guilherme de Lima Cunha hit a streaking Luis Felipe Santos perfectly in stride for a goal. Felipe Santos didn't break stride as he tapped it over the goaltenders outstretched hands. The rest of the half was quiet for both sides, the Lakers took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Lakers put immediate pressure on the Lightning. Jorge Tallada Torres, Lockie Fay, and Mario Gander all put shots on goal early in the half, with Gander being able to break through to add on to the Laker lead and make it a 3-0 game.
After some back and forth, the Lakers were able to add to the lead with Andreas Rossak second goal of the game, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Lakers. Rossak wasn't done yet as he found the back of the net one more time to extend the Laker lead to 5-0 to give himself a hat trick on the day. With the game out of reach the Lakers added one more goal by Ryan Lieser to go up 6-0. The final seconds would tick off the clock and the Lakers would come away with a 6-0 win, and they would start the season 1-0.
Highlights
Andres Roassak started his time with the Lakers off with a bang as he recorded the hat trick in his first game with Mercyhurst. Mario Ganser, Ryan Lieser, and Luis Felipe Santos each added a goal to their line as well to help give Mercyhurst well-rounded effort in game number one.

The Lakers will play on Sunday September 3 at 1:00 pm against Georgian Court to round out the opening weekend of action. The only other matchup between the two came last year, where the Lakers came away with the win by a score of 4-0 and they'll look for similar success this time around as well.
