Wrestling Head Coach, Mike Wehler, Awarded the University’s Commitment to Mission Award

ERIE, Pa. - Wrestling's own Head Coach, Mike Wehler, was awarded the prestigious University's Commitment to Mission Award on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

This award is one of the highest awards given annually to a staff member at Mercyhurst. It is intended to distinguish a staff member who has consistently made a significant positive impact within their department and beyond the Mercyhurst Gates.

Wehler was recognized this year for his leadership on campus as well as the continued success of wrestling's student-athletes in the classroom, on the mat, and in the community.

On top of his own team's success, Wehler stepped in at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships for the Shippensburg Coach who fell ill. He stepped up to ensure the Shippensburg student-athlete, who was preparing for a major quarterfinal bout, was taken care of and offered to coach the student-athlete in the absence of any other representation from Shippensburg. Mike continued to coach the student-athlete throughout the remainder of the tournament. (The full article can be found HERE.)

Assistant Vice President for Athletics, Brad Davis, added "There isn't anyone more deserving of the University's Mission Award than Mike Wehler. He has endeared himself to Mercyhurst, the students, and the community for 17 years. His coaching style, while direct, is extremely selfless and embodies everything Mercyhurst prides itself on. Congratulations to Coach Wehler!"
