Women's Water Polo Falls to Cal State East Bay

O'Fallon, IL – Mercyhurst Women's Water Polo falls to Cal State East Bay in the first round of the WWPA Championship Tournament. Despite great effort from the Lakers, the Pioneers won the game by a score of 10-4. Mercyhurst continues the WWPA Championships tommorow and are set to take on the loser of the Biola and Gannon matchup which is scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m. today.

How It Happened

The Lakers started the postseason play slow as East Bay managed to score first and gained an early lead in the first quarter, 4-0.

Mercyhurst improved their play in the second as Allie Dombkowski received a pass from Sara Marin and scored a spectacular goal, throwing the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 4-1. The Lakers also worked hard on the defensive side of the pool, as they only gave up one goal in that period. Despite that, the Pioneers went into the break with a four-goal lead, 5-1.

Krista Domaracki won the sprint-off to start the second half and Hanna Good scored the opening second half goal for the Lakers, 6-2. A couple of minutes later, Sakura Gavin passed the ball to Ava Gebhardt and she netted another goal for the Lakers, 7-3.

The Lakers kept applying pressure, but East Bay played solid defense and took care of the ball eventually winning the game by a score of 10-4.
