Erie, Pa. - For the fifth time in as many tries, Mercyhurst Men's Basketball is set to play in the NCAA DII Men's Basketball National Tournament as they are named the three-seed in the Atlantic Region, announced the NCAA Sunday night.
"It's the Atlantic Region; it's a tough region," said graduate guard MiyKah McIntosh after seeing the bracket. "It is one of the better regions in all of DII so I'm looking forward to the challenge."
The Lakers come off a 54-53 loss at the hands of IUP Sunday afternoon in the PSAC title game as they now sit at 24-5 on the season overall. The team finished with a mark of 18-4 in conference play for their most wins since joining the PSAC back in 2008. They'll hope to use that solid play against PSAC foes in the first round as they are set to play East Stroudsburg to begin their run in the tournament.
"They have two very good bigs and we have to try and lock them down," said freshman Sean Fullerton when asked about the matchup with East Stroudsburg. "We just have to try and keep them from going."
Mercyhurst plays the tournament opener against the Warriors on Saturday, March 11th, with the two teams set to begin at noon inside the Kovalchick Athletic Complex on the campus of IUP. The other games scheduled are No. 2 West Liberty and No. 7 Pitt-Johnstown at 2:30 p.m. while No. 1 IUP and No. 8 Winston-Salem start at 5:00 p.m. with No. 4 Virginia State and No. 5 Fairmont State closing out the first day at 7:30 p.m.
