Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Baseball played a pair of games Thursday afternoon against Salem University with the Lakers able to get wins in both. Head Coach Joe Spano's crew rolled to a 13-0 win in game one while coming away with a 3-2 victory in the back half of the doubleheader to move to 6-4 on the year.
How it Happened
First Game
The Lakers did not wait around all that long to put a crooked number on the board as they scored three in the second inning. The trio of runs all came off of a Lucas Folmar home run as the senior grabbed his first home run of the season.
The third proved to be the Laker's largest frame of the game as they plated six runs to help them take a 9-0 lead into the middle innings. Mercyhurst collected five hits in the inning with three going for extra bases with the biggest coming from Folmar. The native of Erie, Pa. once again factored heavily into the team's run production as he got his second homer of the day with another three-run blast to make it a nine-run lead for the Lakers.
Mercyhurst added on with four more runs in the fifth frame as they had taken full control in the 13-run win.Â
Game Two
The backend of the doubleheader proved to be a closer game for the Lakers as they took home the 3-2 win. Mercyhurst started off slow on offense as they could not manage to get a hit in the first three innings of the game. Their starter on the bump, Jacob Bazala, did his part in helping keep the Lakers in the game as he did not allow a run over that span with four Tiger hitters reaching base through the first three innings.Â
The Lakers broke through in the fourth frame with a trio of runs. Eric Chorba led off the inning with a home run for his second of the season, turning around the first pitch he saw.
After the first out of the stanza was made, Chris Juchno sent one of the wall as well as Mercyhurst had gained a 2-0 lead.
Salem was able to scratch across a run in the sixth inning with a home run and managed to score one more in the seventh, keeping everyone on their toes until the last out. Fortunately for the Lakers, they were able to call Ben Berdine out of the bullpen with him recording three outs for his second save of the season.
