EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.—Four Mercyhurst wrestlers qualified for nationals while three earned first place honors at the Super Region One Championship on Saturday. The Lakers also had eight wrestlers place in the top six of their respective weight classes while earning a third place team finish.
At 125, Billy Smith earned fourth place honors. After dropping his first bout of the day, the freshman went on to win three in a row with two pinfalls. His third-place bout was hard fought against Brady Carter of East Stroudsburg, but he ultimately fell in a 11-6 decision.
Eric Bartos was the champion at 133 qualifying him for the national tournament. On his way to the finals, the Valley City, Ohio native posted a major decision and a pin. The championship bout was a rematch between Bartos and Devin Flannery of Millersville who matched up at the beginning of the month. Bartos was again victorious this time grabbing a 10-1 major decision.
Freshman
Jake Niffenegger put on an outstanding performance claiming first place at 141 and qualifying for nationals. After a first round bye, Niffenegger picked up a major decision in the quarter and a 7-3 decision to advance to the finals. Deadlocked at two, the championship bout went to sudden victory with the freshman pulling out the victory with a takedown.
Max Stedeford earned a fifth-place finish at 157 while Mike Clark earned sixth at 165.
Dillon Walker was the top wrestler at 174. His performance earned him his second trip to nationals in as many years. The sophomore had a pinfall and a major decision on his way to the final bout which he took in a 4-1 decision.
Luke McGonigal was the fourth Laker to qualify for nationals after placing second at 197. The road to finals was paved by two first period pinfalls and a major decision; however, he couldn't pull out the win falling in sudden victory.
Hunter Harnish was the eighth Laker to place as he earned sixth place honors. Harnish earned a pin in 45 seconds in his first bout before falling to the consolation bracket. He earned a 7-2 decision to advance before dropping his next match.
This year's national tournament is set to run from March 10-11 and is held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
