Lakers Ready for Midweek Matchup

12/5/2023 11:00:00 AM

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst wrestling comes into the new week with one match on the docket. The team goes back out on the road as they head to Ashland, Oh. to take on the Eagles on Wednesday, December 6th, with things starting at 7:00 p.m.

Looking Back

Mercyhurst competed in the Lake Erie Tri Meet this past weekend in Painesville, Oh. Taking part in a pair of matches. The team saw Lake Erie first with the Storm getting the better of that matchup, 29-6. They then rebounded with a win against Fairmont State in match that say five falls for the Lakers that helped results in a 42-5 win, their largest since the 2021-22 season.

Scouting Ashland

The Eagles are 0-2 to this point in the season while also seeing time in a pair of tournaments as they competed in the Glenville State Invitational to open the season while the Findlay Open was their last event. Ashland comes into the new week as one of the better teams in the country as they are ranked 15th per the NWCA's preseason poll. They had a pair of grapplers be named in the individual rankings by the NWCA with Nate Barrett coming in fourth at 174 while Daniel Beemer came in second at 184 behind only Ty McGeary of West Liberty.

Continued Consistency

One Laker who has been able to carry great performances from one week to the next on the mat is Dillon Walker. The native of Cincinnati, Oh. has yet to lose so far this season and has been able to walk away with some major wins in that time, including a win over third ranked Alec Cook of West Liberty in the team's season opener. For his efforts, Walker has been named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week twice so far and looks to make it a third time with a strong perfjoamcne against the Eagles.

Next Event

Mercyhurst goes on the road to once again next time around with the team going to Indianapolis, In. for the Midwest Classic on December 16th and 17th to round out the 2023 leg of their campaign.
