Erie, Pa. - Another week of action is in the books for the Lakers as we grow closer to the holiday season. It was a quiet week for Mercyhurst Athletics as only three teams were in action, but they made plenty of noise. The two loudest came from the hardwood with women's basketball's Lauren Klare and men's basketball's Sean Fullerton both scoring new career-highs to help them be named the PPG Athletes of the Week.
Klare and the Lakers played two games on the week with West Chester and Millersville both coming to Erie while Mercyhurst got the win in both games to move to 8-2 on the season. The team now has an eight-game win streak for their longest since the 2016-17 season while going 4-0 to start PSAC play for the first time in since 2018-19 thanks to Klare's efforts.
The native of Cincinnati, Oh. set a new career-high in points in a single game against the Golden Rams on Monday as she scored 19, going 7-13 from the floor while knocking down five three-pointers in the game for a new career-high while also grabbing seven boards to go along with her four assists. She followed that up with another strong effort against Millersville where she scored 13 points on a 5-9 effort from the field with a trio of triples falling in the comeback win.
Klare is averaging 10.5 points per game to this point in the season with her 47.6 field goal and 39.6 three-point percentage good enough for second on the team while her 21 made threes leads the team to this point in the season. She has been able to hit her stride here of late, scoring 10 or more points in five straight games and hitting 14 of her triples in that time.Â
She and the rest of Lakers will take some time off before their next game as they do not play again until December 30th when they go on the road to Shepherd for. 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
Fullerton and the Lakers played two games on the week as they saw both West Chester and Millersville within their friendly confines Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Mercyhurst split those two games as they now sit at 6-6 on the season with loss to the Golden Rams while defeating Millersville by eight. Fullerton played a big role in both games with the native of Danbury, Ct. able to register a new career-high in points.
The sophomore guard began his week strong against West Chester, scoring 22 points on a 7-11 effort from the floor and nailing five threes. His 22 points along with his five made triples set new career-highs for Fullerton, surpassing the 17 points he had earlier in the year against D'Youville with a trio of triples. He followed that up with another solid outing as he scored 12 points on an efficient 5-8 shooting performance against Millersville in the team's 64-56 win.
Fullerton has been ultra efficient to this point in the season, leading the Lakers in both field goals percentage and three-point percentages shooting 56% from the field while nailing 47.2% of his shots from beyond the arc. His numbers have been some of the more impressive ones in the conference as well as he is sixth in the conference in field goal percentage and tied for second in three point percentage, making him one of the more lethal threats the PSAC has to offer.
Fullerton and the Lakers see one more game in 2023 as they are set to go to see Shepherd on December 30th before coming back home to open up the new year on January 3rd when they host Bloomsburg before seeing Pitt-Johnstown on the 6th.
