ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) proudly hosted the 17th Annual Laker Showdown Tuesday in the Performing Arts Center, bringing together the Mercyhurst community for one of the university's most spirited events of the year. The Laker Showdown celebrates Mercyhurst student-athletes as they showcase their talents on stage in a fun-filled competition, all while raising funds for the HEADstrong Foundation.
The HEADstrong Foundation is dedicated to improving lives affected by cancer. Built in honor of Nick Colleluori, every part of their work is driven by love, family, and the belief that no one should face cancer alone. The Laker Showdown raised $3,481, selling over 530 tickets.
This year's event featured 14 teams competing for the first-place trophy-- women's lacrosse, men's soccer, STUNT, football, water polo, dance, men's lacrosse, women's soccer, flag football, volleyball, field hockey, wrestling, rowing, and last year's champions, men's golf.
When the final scores were tallied and all performances were considered, field hockey captured the first-place title with a standout performance that energized the crowd and impressed the judges. Volleyball earned a second-place finish, while women's soccer secured third place honors.
Serving as Masters of Ceremonies for the evening were Brice Hansen, Alex Jacobs, and Mallory Chase, who kept the audience entertained and the show running smoothly. The judges for this year's competition included athletics bus driver John Timon, instructor William Brosius, and University President Getz, who faced the challenging task of selecting winners from a lineup of impressive performances.
The 17th Annual Laker Showdown once again highlighted the creativity, teamwork, and spirit of Mercyhurst student-athletes while reinforcing the department's commitment to giving back to the community. With another successful year in the books, anticipation is already building for next year's event.
