Lakers Grab 8-5 Win in High Scoring Battle with Lindenwood

St. Charles, Mo. - After a week off, the Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team returned to the ice as they traveled to Lindenwood for a series with the Lions. The Lakers came away with an 8-5 win in a wild high scoring affair.

How it Happened

It took the Lakers only 27 seconds to get on the board as Sofia Nuutinen gathered a pass from Vanessa Upson and fired it past the goaltender, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, the Lions went on the power play and scored 26 seconds into the power-play to tie it up at one. At the 3:50 mark of the period, the Lakers went on a power play of their own. As time was expiring on the Laker advantage, Sofia Nuutinen struck again for her second goal of the game and gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead. After the explosion of offense early in the period, the game slowed down and both sides traded saves and blocked shots. As the first period winded down, the Lions had multiple scoring opportunities that were foiled by the Lakers defense. Sofia Ljung and Mary Sweetapple threw their bodies in front of the puck to block the Lions shots. The Lions kept pushing to tie the game before the end of the period. The Lions went on the power play again and converted their second power play goal of the game.

At the 2:05 mark of the second period, the Lakers took the lead back. Makayla Javier took a shot from the point and Olivia Cvar deflected the puck into the goal, giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead. The Lions kept trying to get that tying goal, but Ena Nystrøm was keeping the Lions off the board. The Lions didn't go away though. They were able to get that tying goal to make it 3-3. Not even two minutes later, the Lakers took the lead back again. Thea Johansson gathered the puck and made a great move to get to her back hand and she beat the goaltender top shelf to make it 4-3. If you blinked, you missed the Lakers score again. This time it was Makayla Javier who found the back of the net. Javier extended the Lakers lead to 5-3. The Lions responded by scoring two goals in under a minute to tie the game at five. Late in the period, the Lakers went on the power play. Sydney Pedersen took a shot that was blocked, but she stayed with the puck and was able to get to a spot in front of the net to take a shot and she buried it. The Lakers once again regained the lead. At the end of two periods of play, the Lakers held a 6-5 lead.

Ena Nystrøm was tested early in the third period, and she was up for the test. It was the Lakers turn to test the Lions goalie, as Riley Johnson and Megan McKay each took a shot to try and pad the Laker lead. A quieter third period came down to the wire. The Lions pulled the goalie to get an extra skater on the ice. The Lions had a prime scoring opportunity, but Ena Nystrøm made a massive save to keep the lead for the Lakers. The Lakers were able to grab two empty net goals in the final minutes, to make the score 8-5. Thea Johansson and Sara Boucher tallied those goals.
