Men’s Basketball Set for Pair of Games

11/9/2023 10:00:00 AM

Erie, Pa. - After playing two games in the sunshine state in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic to open the year, Mercyhurst comes back closer to home as they see Frostburg State on Friday, November 10th, followed by Bluefield State the following dat at 4:00 p.m. at Clarion. Pa.

Looking Back

Mercyhurst began their season in Lakeland, Fl. in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic where they saw two top 25 teams in Central Oklahoma and the Colorado School of Mines. The Lakers were unable to get the job done and fell in both games, but put up a great second half fight against the Orediggers in game two in a 65-62 final after being down by double-digits at halftime.

Laker Leaders

Graduate Jeff Planutis was the team's top scored through the first two games, scoring a total of 26 points, averaging 13 per game with Sean Fullerton's 10 per game coming in second. Aidan Reichert has been the team's top rebounder with 5 per game with Max Jusianiec coming in second with 4.5. One defense, Planutis has a team high 2 steals per game while James Thomas and Jusianiec both have 1 block per game.

Scouting Frostburg

The Bobcats come off a season in which they finished 8-20, going 4-18 in the MEC, and look for better results this season. Frostburg has a large group of veterans with 11 upperclassmen on the roster for the 2023-24 season. Despite that group of older players they'll look to regroup as each of their top five scores from a season ago are not long with the team.

Scouting Bluefield

Bluefield finished the 2022-23 season just under .500 as they ended with a 13-15 record. The team has a roster built on experience with eight juniors and one lone senior on their roster while having six underclassmen as well. They'll hope to use their depth of veteran players to have a better year this time around and climb over the .500 mark. Of the team's returners, Chase Page is the leading scorer from a season ago, averaging 5.8 points a game so the team will look to new faces to get it done this time around.

Next Game

The Lakers play at home for the first time this season in the second full week of November as they are set to host Daemen on Wednesday, November 15th in a 7:30 p.m. matchup before they go on the road to see Roberts Wesleyan to round out the week on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
