Lakers Drop Road Matchup with Clarion

Clarion, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team traveled to Clarion for the first of two road games this weekend. The Lakers fought hard but Clarion was able to take the match in three sets.  

How it Happened 

Corinne Bechtold got the scoring started with a kill on an Alexa Mitchell assist. The Lakers jumped out to a 5-2 lead on a kill by Andrea Zaric. After some back-and-forth, the Golden Eagles took a 15-11 lead. The Lakers answered back with a kill by Andrea Zaric. The Lakers drew closer on a kill by Maggie Thomas, making it 16-15 in favor of the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles used a 9-5 run to close out set one and take it 25-20. 

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-4 lead. Kate Hennessy cut into the lead with a kill, making it 9-5. An 8-0 run extended the Golden Eagles lead to 17-5. Andrea Zaric stopped the Golden Eagle run with a kill. The Lakers scored four straight points capped off by a Maggie Thomas kill. It was now 18-11. Errors by the Golden Eagles and a kill by Kate Hennessy made it 21-16. The Golden Eagles scored the four points they needed to close out set two 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.  

In the third set, the Golden Eagles held an early 14-5 lead, but Asli Erdi found an opening for a kill to make it 14-6. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 19-7 before a kill by Maggie Thomas took the momentum away from the Golden Eagles. A short run by the Lakers made it closer as Asli Erdi notched another kill, and Kate Hennessy did as well, but the Golden Eagles closed out set three 25-13 and they took the match 3-0.   

Highlights 

Kate Hennessy led the Lakers in kills with nine.  

Alexa Mitchell tallied 14 assists.  

Alia Mastromatteo and Andrea Zaric each had a service ace.  

Corinne Bechtold added five digs. 

Maggie Thomas led the team in blocks with four. 

Next Up 

The Lakers will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to UPJ for their final road game of the regular season. Start time for the match is set for 1 PM.
