Erie, Pa. — Mercyhurst finished the series against Air Force and they did so in dominant fashion. After a tough 5-2 loss last night, the Lakers flipped the script to beat the Falcons convincingly 5-1.
How It Happened
The Lakers started their redemption bid strong, scoring twice in quick succession within the first five minutes of play. Ryan Coughlin netted the first one on a silky backhand past the Falcons keeper Guy Blessing. That would be. Couglin's first career colligate goal and second career point. Mercyhurst doubled the lead two minutes later on a power play, as leading scorer Philip Waugh flung it in mid-range from the right side of the net, leaving Air Force looking frazzled at the jump.
Mercyhurst didn't let up there, scoring multiple times within two minutes of each other yet again. In the ninth minute, Kyler Head provided for the Lakers on the second consecutive day, this time off a deflected shot thrown in by Connor Pelc. Then in the eleventh minute Keanan Stewart also grabbed a goal off a deflected shot, Dustin Geregach throwing this one on goal. Stewart executed a nice 180 degree spin, giving Mercyhurst a 4-0 that they eventually took into the second period.
Air Force, determined to comeback, got the the second period started with Holt Oliphant getting them on the board four minutes in. He also scores for the second consecutive day. The Falcons played a lot sharper hockey in the period, but not much action accumulated as a result. Owen Say was heavily tested with 13 saves in the period but was sturdy as ever, keeping it a three goal lead for the Lakers into the final period.
The third period started how the second ended, as a stalemate with the defensive battle going strong. Air Force took over the lead in the shots for the first time in the game, though they weren't actually able to get anything past Say. Before it all wrapped up Ryan Coughlin pushed them even farther ahead with his 2nd goal of the game and his career with five minutes left on the clock. The series ends as a split with the Lakers victories in this one, 5-1.
