Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst wrestling is set to get back out on the mats this upcoming weekend as they head for the buckeye state to compete in the Findlay Open, hosted by the Oilers, on Saturday, October 18th, with things kicking off at 9:00 a.m.
A Look Back
The Lakers had their first taste of competition this past week with a pair of events. The team hosted second-ranked West Liberty in their first dual meet of the season on Thursday, November 9th, in a 24-20 loss before going to Cleveland, Oh. for the Ohio Intercollegiate Open Sunday. The team saw great efforts in both events and were able to gather some momentum going forward.
Dillon's Big Day
Dillon Walker was one of the Lakers who got their season started off the way he had hoped as he came away with a win over his West Liberty counterpart. Walker moved from 174 to 165 for this season and saw the third-ranked wrestler in his new weight class in Alec Cook and came away with the win via a major decision, announcing his presence as one of the top wrestlers for Mercyhurst once again. Walker comes off a season in which he was named an All-PSAC honoree and hopes for even more this time around in his junior season.
Findlay Open
Mercyhurst has competed in the Findlay Open several time before with their most recent appearance coming in the 2022-23 season. The Lakers fared well in the event and hope for similar events this time as they look to continue to build their groove here in the early part of the season. In last year's iteration of the event, Mercyhurst saw one podium finish in Eric Bartos at 125 while having six other wrestlers finish with multiple wins on the day.
Next Match
Mercyhurst gets some time off before their next competition as they do not get back on the mats until the Lake Erie Trip Meet on Saturday, December 2nd, when the team goes to Painesville, Oh.
