Box Score Charleston, WV- The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team began NCAA tournament play this afternoon, as they drew a first round matchup with Gannon University. The two teams are awfully familiar with each other, already seeing one another twice this season, and it showed. When it was all said and done, Mercyhurst fell short of Gannon, by a score of 1-0
How it Happened:
Despite a few offensive opportunities from each team, both defenses held strong in the first half, as the score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.
Gannon seemed to push the envelope early, launching 14 shots, while Mercyhurst only got off 5. Of those shots, Maddie Elbro made some key saves, recording 4 in the half.
The Lakers continued to turn away offensive pressure to start the second half, as the Golden Knights controlled the time of possession. Gannon finally found the back of the net in the 75th minute, as Madeline Endler converted in the top left corner.
Despite the goal, Maddie Elbro played outstanding, turning away Gannon attempts on multiple occasions. In total, the Golden Knights tallied 29 shots and put constant pressure on the Laker defense.
The Lakers had a last-minute attempt at their first and only corner kick of the game but came up empty and the sound of the horn came with a sigh of defeat.
Highlights:
Maddie Elbro and the Laker defense took 29 shots from the Gannon offense, turning them away all but once. Elbro finished with 8 saves on the day.
Mercyhurst's stellar season comes to an end, but the team's success in hindsight remains impressive. Surpassing program milestones and earning the PSAC West regular season crown is memorable despite today's defeat.
