Women's Basketball Dominates in Home Opener

Erie, PA- The Mercyhurst Women's basketball team hosted Lake Erie College for their home opener this evening and dominated every facet of the game, winning 84-36. It is tied for the 2nd lowest opponent score since joining the PSAC in 2006. The Lakers are now 1-2 on the year and will begin preparing for their next matchup against Roberts Wesleyan.

How it Happened:

The first quarter belonged to the Lakers as the team outscored Lake Erie 24-11. Danielle Grim picked up right where she left off, scoring 7 points while Bailey Kuhns and Grace Clary chipped in with 6 points each.

The Lakers grew their lead in the second quarter, clamping down on the defensive end, only allowing 5 points the entire quarter. With the strong defense came strong offense. Bailey Kuhns continued her hot start by scoring another 8 points in the frame to bring her total to 14 in the game.

In the first half, the Lakers out rebounded the Storm 26-11 and shot over 50% from the field. After dropping two close games to begin the season, the Lakers seem to put it all together in the first half of this contest.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Lakers continued to pour it on in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Storm 21-10. It was another game where the Lakers showed off their depth, as 14 different players scored the basketball.

The Lakers continued to stuff the stat sheet in the 4th, doubling up the Storm in both offensive and defensive rebounds. Mercyhurst also shot over 50% from the field for the entire game and received great minutes from their bench, as the bench tallied 45 points in total.

Highlights

Bailey Kuns led all scorers with 16 points, while also recording 6 rebounds on the night. It is the 3rd straight game Kuhns has scored double digits. Lauren Klare and Julia Buchman also played well, totaling 8 and 7 points respectively.

Lexi Wagner and Sarah Hortin lead the charge off the bench as the Laker bench tallied 45 points on the night.

Next Game:

The Lakers will now travel to Rochester, NY to play Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, November 18th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM, as Brooklyn Kohlheim's squad looks to go for two in a row.
