Women's Basketball Falls to Wheeling

Wheeling, WV- After an overtime loss in West Liberty, the Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team took a 25-minute ride down to Wheeling, WV for an afternoon matchup with the Cardinals of Wheeling University. Despite leading at the break, the Lakers fell short of the Cardinals 64-57.

How it Happened:

After another back and forth first quarter, the Lakers grabbed the lead with 8 seconds left as Bailey Kuhns made a layup off a pass from Danielle Grim. After leading the Lakers in the opener, both Kuhns and Grim came out hot for the Lakers once again, pacing Mercyhurst on both ends of the floor. The first quarter ended with the Lakers leading 13-11.

The second quarter saw the Lakers build their lead as numerous players found the stat sheet. Lauren Klare continued to shoot it effectively from deep, hitting a three midway through the quarter. Ava Waid, Sarah Hortin, and Maria McConnell also converted to give Mercyhurst a 20-16 lead heading into the break.

The first half spoke to how deep this Lakers squad really is. Brooklyn Kohlheim's group can produce in many ways, as many players score the basketball. The first half was led by Bailey Kuhns, who tallied 9 points. Danielle Grim contributed 8 points and 3 rebounds in the half as well.

It was all Cardinals in the third quarter, as they outscored the Lakers 18-5. Benefiting from 53% shooting, Wheeling was able to build a small lead as the Lakers hit a drought in the third, only shooting 1-11 from the floor.

Mercyhurst played better in the 4th quarter, but the Cardinals shot over 60% from the field, and made 9 of 10 free throws to secure the win, 64-57.

Highlights:

Danielle Grim led the Lakers in scoring once again, finishing with 15 points. Grim also contributed 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Bailey Kuhns put together another solid performance to cap off the road trip, tallying 12 points on the day. Sarah Hortin also stuffed the stat sheet with 8 points and 4 rebounds.
