Lakers Prepare for Pair of Contests

10/9/2023 10:00:00 AM

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst field hockey gears up for two games in the second full week of October, looking to grab their first win in nine tries. The Lakers begin with Frostburg State on Tuesday, October 10th, at home before they go on the road on Saturday to see the Huskies of Bloomsburg.

Where They Stand

The Lakers currently find themselves at the bottom of the PSAC standings with a 2-9 overall record while holding a 0-5 mark in conference play, being one of only two teams without a PSAC as Slippery Rock sits at 0-4. East Stroudsburg and Shippensburg sit atop the conference with 4-0 marks while Kutztown and West Chester are next with 3-1 records in conference.

Laker Leaders

Jenna Cavalieri leads the team in goals to this point in the season as she has found the back of the cage six time so far in 2023. She is followed by Ellie Schau who has five while Lexi Odrobina rounds out the top three with four to her line. Cavalieri has also been one of the top facilitators for the team, collecting three assists to tie Samantha Myers for the team lead, having 15 points to her line in total. Kayla Desormeau continues to be impressive in goal for Mercyhurst with 101 saves to her line. She has collected double-digit saves in six straight games to help her crack the top five in the country in saves.

Scouting Frostburg

The Bobcats are 7-5 to this point in the year, losing their last matchup as they fell to West Chester by a final of 3-1. The two teams have already seen each other once this season with Frostburg getting the better of that matchup in a 5-0 final in a game in which they scored at least once in every period. The team is led by Paige Leitzel who has 15 points on the season with six goals and three assists, making her someone the Lakers look to key in on.

Scouting the Huskies

Bloomsburg is 9-3 on the year with a 2-3 record in the PSAC with a win over IUP in their last matchup, 2-0. The Huskies started the season hot, winning each of their first seven games but have cooled off as they have gone 2-3 in their last five matchups, giving Mercyhurst some hope they can catch their opponent off guard. The Huskies have four players with double-digit point goals with Aydan McFarland leading the way with 19 as she has a team-high eight goals and three assists.

Next Game

The Lakers look ahead and see East Stroudsburg and Slippery Rock next. Both the Warriors and Rock make the trek to Erie for those games with ESU coming to town on Saturday, October 21st for a 11:00 a.m. Mercyhurst then plays Slippery Rock under the lights on October 24th in a 7:00 p.m. start.
