Erie, Pa. - Coming off a win yesterday, the Mercyhurst Volleyball team looked for a repeat performance in today's match as they welcomed in Slippery Rock. After an eventful first set that saw the Lakers win 34-32, Slippery Rock won the next three sets to win the match 3-1.
How it Happened
Kaitlin Murphy got the scoring started for the Lakers with a kill. Asli Erdi followed it up with a kill of her own to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Slippery Rock took the lead after scoring four straight points. Kate Hennessy got the Lakers to within one after a kill. After some back and forth the set was all square at ten. Slippery Rock was able to take a 21-16 lead late in the set, but the Lakers fought back to take a one-point lead. The 5-0 run the Lakers went on was capped off by a Kate Hennessy kill. Both sides went back and forth, and no one could get the winning point in the set. Tied up at 32, Kate Hennessy notched a kill, and Kaitlin Murphy had a service ace and the Lakers won set two 34-32.
Slippery Rock took an 11-7 lead early in set two. Maggie Thomas notched a kill to cut into the Slippery Rock lead. Alia Mastromatteo got the serve and the Lakers rattled off six straight points to take a 19-16 lead. Slippery Rock went on a run of their own, scoring seven straight points and taking the lead back. Slippery Rock closed out set two with a 25-21 win.
Set three was back and forth early on, with a score of 8-8. Slippery Rock ripped off eight straight points to take a 16-8 lead. They extended that lead late in the set, making it 23-12. The Lakers fought back on the serves of Madalynn Ward. Maggie Thomas and Andrea Zaric each had a kill off the serves, and Ward added two service aces as well. Despite the comeback, Slippery Rock grabbed the last point they needed to take set three 25-17.
The Lakers took the early lead in set four off the serves of Alia Mastromatteo. Andrea Zaric capped off a 6-0 run with a kill to give the Lakers a 9-7 lead. Slippery Rock went on a run of their own to make it 16-11. Slippery Rock went on a 9-6 run to close out set four and take the match 3-1.
Highlights
Kate Hennessy led the team in kills with 18 and digs with 24. Maggie Thomas finished with ten kills, and two blocks. Alexa Mitchell dished out a ton of assists, finishing with 41. Andrea Zaric added ten kills as well as 17 digs. Kaitlin Murphy, Alia Mastromatteo, and Madalynn Ward all had two service aces.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, November 3rd as they travel to Clarion for a road matchup with the Golden Eagles. Start time for the match is set for 6 PM.
