Lakers Drop Series Finale with Robert Morris

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team looked for a sweep of Robert Morris in the opening weekend of CHA play. After the Lakers tied it late in the third period, the Colonials took the lead back and avoided a sweep with a 3-2 win over the Lakers.

How it Happened

It didn't take long for the Lakers to get on the board in this one as Kylee Mahoney found the back of the net just 1:39 into the game. Sara Boucher and Sofia Nuutinen assisted on the goal. Midway through the first period, the Colonials nodded it up at one. The Lakers kept putting pressure on the Colonials as they put 16 shots on goal in the first period. At the end of one period of play, the game was tied 1-1.

It was more of the same for the Lakers early in the second period as they were putting shots on goal consistently but couldn't get any to go. The Colonials were putting shots on goal as well, but Ena Nystrom was standing tall in the crease. After two periods of play the game was still tied at one.

Early in the third period, the Lakers took a penalty that gave the Colonials the advantage. The Colonials took advantage and took the lead on a power-play goal. With just under two minutes left in the game, the Lakers pulled the goaltender, and they tied the game. Megan McKay dumped the puck into the zone, Thea Johansson gathered the puck, and found Sofia Ljung who beat the goaltender for the goal. 36 seconds later, a save by Ena Nystrom took an unfortunate bounce for the Lakers, and the Colonials picked up the puck and scored to take a 3-2 lead. The Lakers tried to tie it but couldn't get anything to go and the Colonials walked away with the win.
