Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst football rounds out the month of October on the road this weekend with California (Pa.) as the Lakers hit the road to see the Vulcans on Saturday, October 28th, at 12:00 p.m., looking to grab their third win of the season.
Where They Stand
Mercyhurst sits at the bottom of the PSAC West standings alongside Clarion and Edinboro at 1-4 in the conference and 2-6 overall. Slippery Rock currently leads the way as they have yet to drop a game, holding a 5-0 record in the conference and are 8-0 overall. Cal comes in right behind them at 4-1 alongside Gannon to round out the top three.
Laker Leaders
Adam Urena currently leads the team in passing with 2,012 to his line through the air with 19 TDs on a 61.4 completion percentage. Jaylen Butera has been the team's top rusher with 503 yards to his line to go along with six scores on the ground. Joe Kerbacher now leads the team in both receptions (27) and receiving yards (382) while hauling in a pair of touchdowns, tying him with Austin Urena and Braydon Black for second on the team. On defense, Christian Taylor leads the way with 55 total tackles while Camden White's 4.0 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks are tops on the team.
Historic Hurler
Adam Urena eclipsed 2,000 passing yards for the season this past weekend against the Golden Knights, surpassing a milestone that a Laker QB has not done since Doug Altavilla in 2017 when he finished with 2,345. Urena has nearly 20 touchdowns to his ledger with 19 for the most since Altavilla's 19 in 2016. With already such impressive numbers and at least three more games to go in the season, Urena has a chance to rewrite the history books under center for the Lakers.
Scouting Cal
The Vulcans come into the week nine matchup with a record of 5-2 overall while going 4-1 in conference play with their lone loss coming this past weekend as they fell to Slippery Rock 42-21. Cal's defense has been exceptionally stingy as they rank in the top five in the PSAC in both rushing and passing yards allowed. On offense it has been quarterback Davis Black who has done a lot of the heavy lifting with 1,777 yards and 14 TDs to his ledger for the season. His favorite target has been Eric Willis III who has 38 catches for 702 yards and six touchdowns with each of those figures ranking in the top three in the conference.
Next Game
Mercyhurst returns home to begin the month of November as they are set to host Seton Hill. The Griffins will come to town on Saturday, November 4th, at 2:00 p.m. for First Responder and Military Appreciation Day inside Saxon Stadium.
