Lakers Lose in Home Finale

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst field hockey played their final contest inside Saxon Stadium Tuesday night as they welcomed Slippery Rock. After the two teams played each other through the first two periods of play, The Rock managed to score a pair of goals in the late going to secure the 2-0 win as Mercyhurst moves to 2-13 on the year.

How it Happened

The first quarter was a close one with the two teams trying to feel each other out through the first 15 minutes of action. There were a total of three shots in the frame between the two teams with the Lakers owning two of those, proving to be the more aggressive team out of the gate. That did not lead to a goal, though, as the score remained at 0-0 going into the second.

The second stanza was more of the same as neither team could crack the score board going into the locker room. Slippery Rock managed to have the lone shot of the period with Erin Woland's attempt going wide.

The Rock came out of the halftime break as the better team, taking the lead. Mercyhurst managed to grab the momentum at the begging of the frame as they had five corners and three shots in the opening three minutes, but they once again came up short in finding the back of the cage. It was not until the 43rd minute of the game that Madison Shomo scored to help the Rock claim a 1-0 lead. Shomo scored again in the later stages of the fourth to help make it a multi-goal game, securing the win for the Rock in the end.

Highlights

Maddie Huffer led the way for the Lakers in shots with three, finishing as the only player with multiple shots in the game. She was followed by Amy Van Rooyen, Jenna Cavalieri, Delfina Magro, and Elizabeth Jackson each having one apiece.

Next Game

Mercyhurst rounds out their regular season schedule this upcoming Saturday, October 28th, with they go to Shippensburg to play the Raiders in a 12:00 p.m. start.
